Sigma Alpha Iota, International Music Fraternity, is a Greek music fraternity for women. It was founded on June 12, 1903, at the University of Michigan School of Music, Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Founders were Elizabeth Campbell, Frances Caspari, Minnie Davis Sherrill, Leila Farlin, Nora Crane Hunt, Mary Storrs Andersen, and Georgina Potts. There are over 96,083 initiated members in SAI; 191 college chapters, 114 alumnae chapters, and one international chapter.

Sigma Alpha Iota Purposes


To form chapters of music students and musicians who shall by their influence and their musical interest uphold the highest ideals of a musical education.
To raise the standards of productive muscial work among the women students of colleges, conservatories and universities.
To further the development of music in America and promote a stronger bond of musicial interest and understanding between foreign countries and America.
To give inspiration and material aid to its members.
To organize the cultural life of its members as a contributing factor to their educational program.
To cooperate wholeheartedly with the ideals and aims of the Alma Mater.
To adhere to the highest standards of American citizenship and democracy.


2000 - 2003 National Objectives


The following Objectives were formulated by the National Executive Board following the 2000 National Convention

Create a desire for lifetime commitment to the fraternity through increased interaction between college and alumnae chapters.
Celebrate the traditions of our past, as we create our future, through a renewed commitment to fraternity education.
Aspire to present meaningful ritual that is well-rehearsed and memorized, using its principles to enrich our daily lives.
Promote public awareness of women in all fields of music through increased support of performers, teachers, composers, conductors, therapists, business and technology experts.
Honor our seven founders by increasing chapter membership yearly.
Encourage harmony and sisterhood among the diverse membership of the fraternity.
Prepare for our Centennial Celebration!
